One. Two. Freddie’s comin’ for you…

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on October 28, 2010 by sonofstapes

It is my extreme shame to admit that, other than the remake that came out last year, I have never seen a Nightmare on Elm St. movie.

I get the drill, of course. Freddie is an evil bastard, he diddles some kids, parents get upset and burn him alive, he comes back to haunt his killers by getting their children where they have no hope of helping them – in their dreams.

So you can imagine that tonight’s double bill of the first and third installments of this series has me a little excited. It’s gonna be an evening of red & black striped sweaters and awkward finger claws. Join us, won’t you?

The Nightmare on Elm Street double is screening at Ed’s place, starting with Nightmare on Elm Street at 7pm, and Nightmare on Elm Street part 3 at 9pm.

A slight kink in the armor…

… or something.

Basically, due to Thanksgiving, we may have to delay tonight’s screening of Romero’s Survival of the Dead.

It is still happening tonight, just later than 8pm. Also, we’re not sure when exactly…

SO – here’s what to do. If you want to join us tonight, contact me, and you will be notified ASAP of when we’re screening it. It will still be at my place, and we anticipate it will start no later than 10pm. It might be earlier. Who’s to say?

(NOTICE: This article may contain spoilers if you haven’t seen [rec] or Quarantine)

Heeeeeey everybody!

We’ll be posting next week’s schedule sometime today, but until that time, let me just siren-song you into considering coming out for tonight’s screening of [rec] 2!

“Ed, that’s silly. I’ve never seen [rec]! Why would I see [rec] 2?”

I’m glad you asked me that, invisible interactor.  The main attraction for the masses about [rec] 2, is that the original [rec] is Quarantine in a different language (Spanish trailer for [rec], but, don’t worry, our copy of [rec] 2 has subtitles). Basically, what I am trying to say if that if you’ve seen EITHER film, you are a valid candidate for [rec] 2.

“Now, surely there are SOME differences between [rec] and Quarantine?”

Surely! But not many.  Other than some very minor stylistic choices, and a few extra characters in Quarantine to up the body count (USA! USA! USA!),  the only major and relevant difference is the nature of the virus that turns people into the zombies in the film.

(Here come those spoilers I warned you about…)

Essentially, both films end in the room where the virus originated – the penthouse apartment at the top of the building. In Quarantine, if I remember correctly, the virus has been developed in smaller mammals (dogs and cats), and – oops – somehow spread to humans. It’s basically super rabies.

In [rec], however, it is discovered that the person living in the penthouse is part of a doomsday cult, has bred this disease in rats, and then systematically infected himself and several doomed orphans whom he has been keeping in his attic. His intention being to remove life from the planet in the name of Satan (presumably).

In both films, you get to see both the Alpha Zombie (it looks way different than the others, so that’s the term I’m giving it) and one of the orphans, which is all-hopped up on virus too (though in Quarantine, because of their changed ending, there is no explanation of why there’s an Alpha Zombie, or why there’s a plagued child in the attic). The films end with the heroine, Angela Vidal, and her Camera man getting dispatched by the Alpha Zombie.

“Okay, so there’s some differences. I think I can keep those straight. But why tell us this?”

[rec] 2, from what I have read, begins immediately after the first one ends. 15 minutes after their last contact with anyone alive inside, A SWAT team, outfitted with cameras, goes into the tenement building to clean house. Will they succeed? Hard to say.

I guess you’ll just have to come and watch it…

[rec] 2 screens tonight at 8pm @ Ed’s place.

Ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling!

TONIGHT! CANNIBAL GIRLS! Directed by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) and starring Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin (from before their SCTV fame)!

Trailer?

Having not watched the trailer before now, I cannot with any certainty tell you if the copy I have includes the warning bells before ‘erotic or gruesome’ scenes, but here’s hoping.

So, yeah, come see this cinematic gem tonight, at my place, at 8pm. We’ll be starting the movie sharpish, so be sure to arrive beforehand.

More trailers! MORE TRAILERS, DAMN IT!

Posted in trailers with tags , , , , on September 29, 2010 by sonofstapes

I know, I know. You want content and schedule updates. Well, those are coming, but until then MORE TRAILERS!

In contrast to my last post, here are some vintage goodies we’ve secured for the month.

First up, straight out of 1970, Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly. Meet the evil family that you don’t want to visit. Ever. Seems like this dysfunctional family, all done up anachronistically, will be killing a few people with household objects, and generally being dicks to everyone they come across (well, except for Mumsy, who is the seductress on the team). This one looks like a lot of fun for… well, not all ages, but most of ‘em!

Next, from 1973 we have Don’t Look in the Basement, which also appears to be a group of misfits that end up butchering people. This little gem comes from the same minds of Last House on the Left, which was a bizarre addition to last year’s horroctober listings. If this has any of the same production elements as its predecessor, there are sure to be plenty of unintentional laughs.

Going back further in time to 1963, the Haunting. This is the story of a paranormal investigator who goes to Hill House in order to seek ‘the key to another world’ with his team of a historian, a skeptic and… a semi-psychic witch. I have a feeling that last one is going to cost them. Oh, and there’s ghosts, too! Don’t forget about them…

Finally, Hitchcock’s 1951 work, Strangers on a Train. Now, yes, it has been pointed out that this is not a horror movie per se, but, we really wanted a Hitchcock film on the lineup, and neither of us had seen it. It involves murder, though, which is good enough for me. Besides, with lines in the trailer like “a vortex of conspiracy”, how can it be anything short of stupendous?

SHORTLY a schedule will go up with our plan of attack for the first week. Friday night is our first screening, so, I hope you’ll join us!

More trailers for a rainy night…

Posted in trailers with tags , , , , on September 27, 2010 by sonofstapes

Only because we can… here are some more trailers for films we’re planning to watch in October! Tonight, I want to share with you some of the modern films we’re putting up for the offering…

First up, one of my favorite Genre man’s most recent installment in his zombie saga: George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead. Looks like you’re basically getting a little bit of all his older movies in this one. Lots of head explosions and other ridiculous, pus-oozing special effects.  Ol’ George might get older, but does his commentary on society? Let’s find out!

And speaking of Romero remakes! Here’s the Crazies! Doesn’t look like it will have even the slightest resemblance to the original. It almost looks like it will take a Spielberg’s War of the Worlds remake motif of constantly topping yourself with mind-blowing atrocities.  I’m sure Timothy Olyphant will be able to fix things.

Moving right along, House of the Devil. What is the price to lure two freshman college girls into your mansion to have horror visited upon them in an innovative and gut-wrenching fashion? The answer is $400.

Finally, Trick R Treat. Four different stories, seemingly taking place in the same place. Never forget to check your candy.

Can you feel the horror rising? Riiiising?

More trailers…

Posted in trailers with tags , , , , , on September 23, 2010 by sonofstapes

These are just too fun not to post…

FIRST, let’s talk about the Mayfair. The Mayfair is an epic place. Epic, epic, epic. We’ve been eagerly awaiting their October schedule, and here it is!

So, we intend to include two Mayfair screenings as part of our series. So, mark your calendars appropriately.

First up, Hammer’s Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell.  This movie appears to tell of a time when Mental Institutions showers weren’t full of rape, but good times! I wasn’t a big fan of our Hammer selection from last year, but this one could be a different story! It plays at the Mayfair Sunday, October 3rd at 8:30pm

Secondly, Italian director Lucio Fulci’s celebrated B-movie Zombie, a sister piece to Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (in spirit only) is going to be one of the late night screenings for October. I cannot tell you folks how good this flick is, between the soundtrack, the intense eye-trauma (not for the squeamish!) and the shark/zombie fight. In fact, if that last sentence didn’t get your movie-watching juices flowing, I don’t know what can be done for you. It plays at the Mayfair Friday, October 29th at 11:55pm

Don’t worry – we’ll have other B-Movie gems lined up for those of you not able to make it out to the Mayfair.

Such as these two from 1977!

Shock Waves – With a bunch of water jokes in the trailer, some not-explicitly nazi overtones, and a guy that looks kinda like Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys, this one can’t go wrong! I am pretty excited to watch this one. Perhaps as a double bill with Dead Snow? We’ll see…  Gimme that flashlight!!

the Car – You probably wouldn’t think a movie with a car as the villain would be predictable, and awful… and you might be right! But check out the cliché scene where the car sneaks up on a woman on the phone. You can’t find cheese this strong in shops these days! What Evil Force Drives…. the CAR???

Just so’s ya know…

Hey gang,

If you’ve been religiously following our site here on a daily basis (which I’m SURE everybody has been), you might have noticed that our tentative movie list has been evolving.

This is due to a couple factors:

- Numbers. We had way, way too many films on the long list. While we’re not keeping it to a hard, fast 31 films, we have to be realistic about just how many movies we can watch.

- Movie elitism. Given that Jess and I are not usual kind of movie watchers, we have been trying to head off a couple of trends.  For example, we’ve been trying to cut out any remakes (we’ve only got one on the list now!). We’ve also been attempting to limit the number of modern movies that make it on the list – we’re not saying modern horror movies shouldn’t be watched, but we both really enjoy particular eras of filmmaking from the past. This has not been as easy as we’d hoped, and you’ll notice a good number of the films are from the 2000s. We aren’t likely to change this soon, though. We scoured a lot of modern ones from the list as is, and unless something particularly epic comes along, all of the current ones listed are likely to say.

- Availability. I hate to say it, but some of these titles are RIDICULOUSLY hard to find. Most notably, we have been unable to find so much as a trailer for the film the Eliminator, much less a viable torrent. Our next step is to visit the Invisible Cinema, and stores like that. However, this could mean the film won’t be screened, and we’d have to replace it.

Anyway, just wanted to let you folks know, in case anyone was outraged about some of the films suddenly no longer being on the list.

Some trailers…

Posted in trailers with tags , , , , on September 21, 2010 by sonofstapes

Since we’re getting right into this, I figured one of the best things to do would be to throw up some trailers for the films we’re going to be watching. I mean, why not? Youtube makes it possible, and the possibilities are endless.

Let’s start with the film I’m most excited to see out of this year’s selection – [Rec] 2! The Spanish army is gonna try and mop up the SNAFU that went down in [Rec], and I’ll bet you it doesn’t go as planned!

Vincent Price was one of our celebrated heroes last year, so we wanted to make sure to include him in the 2010 project. I give you Return of the Fly, in glorious 1959 black and white camp!

Mixing one of our favorites from last year (Director of Black Christmas, Bob Clark) with one of our favorites to hate (Writer/Director of Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things & Deranged, Alan Ormsby) could be epic! Have a look at the trailer for Dead of Night – Is Andy actually able to kill someone, like the characters doubt? Stay tuned…

Finally, Blacula – Dracula’s soul brother. Warm, young bodies will fill his hunger. Hot, fresh blood will quench his awful thirst. Ironic puns will swarm out and make us groan. One thing’s for sure in this trailer – Blacula doesn’t take shit from jive-talking cabbies.

For good measure, here’s a sweet one liner from the Simpsons. Don’t worry, it’s relevant.

I’ll post a few more trailers in the future, but this should be enough to whet your teeth on for now. See you in October, fright fans!

Last year’s model…

Here are Ed’s summaries of all the films we watched last year in this little adventure. It should be noted that I, jessrawk, do not necessarily agree with everything he has said here, nor all of his ratings. I was not on-the-ball enough to do the same. In any case, these titles and summaries will give you an idea of what’s to come in Horroctober…

Horroctober is looming near…

Posted in introduction with tags , on September 20, 2010 by jessrawk

What is horroctober? It is a month in which two film lovers undertake the grandiose and perhaps crazy task of watching at least one horror film a day for the month of October. Last year we tackled 35 films total. This year, who knows where the month will lead us…
